When Brian Spaun and Dave Pimentel met a few years ago, no one thought that it would start the Spaun Drums Company. Spaun did drum repairs, refinishing and customizing them, while Pimentel had a machinist background. Eventually, the two dedicated drummers made a conscious effort to build quality drums with unique features, that could be affordable to those who simply wanted to play drums at home. They eventually formed a partnership, made prototype designs, and by 1996, they shipped their first Spaun drums kits.

Even if the Spaun drums are basically one line of drums, they have different sizes and colors to choose from. All the shells of the drums are made of the same materials, construction, number of plies and type of bearing edge. The same type of steel hoop is used on their snare drums and toms; however, the bass drum has maple hoops. All drums are satin hand rubbed, which are available in a variety of hues. Experimenting with different configurations, the friends eventually decided that the sound they were looking for was best found by using 8-ply maple shells without the reinforcing rings.
